Woman arrested following death of Steve Bruce’s four-month-old grandson | Football | Sport

A woman has been arrested over the tragic death of Steve Bruce’s grandson Madison Smith. The four-month-old baby passed away in October.

News of the baby’s death was announced by Bruce’s employers Blackpool ahead of their League One clash with Barnsley.

Bruce missed the match, before thanking fans for their support on his return to the dugout.

“We can confirm an investigation is ongoing and a woman in her 40s was arrested on suspicion of child neglect. She was questioned and released on bail pending further inquiries,” explained a spokesman from Greater Manchester Police on Monday.

In October, Blackpool released a statement that read: “The club can announce that head coach Steve Bruce will not be in attendance at tomorrow’s fixture against Barnsley due to the tragic passing of his four-month old grandson, Madison.

“Everyone at the football club send their love to Steve and his family. We ask that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with this sudden and unexpected loss in their family.”

Madison was the son of Bruce’s daughter Amy, 37, and former Fulham, Millwall and QPR player Matt Smith.

A host of Smith’s former clubs paid their respects in October, with Millwall writing: “Millwall Football Club sends its unconditional love and support to Matt Smith, and his family and friends, following the passing of his four-month old son, Madison. We are with you every step of the way, Smudger.”

Fulham penned: “Everyone at Fulham is sending their love and support to Matt Smith and his family tonight.”

Oldham wrote: “As a club, we send our love and deepest condolences to Matt Smith and his family, following the incredibly sad passing of his four-month old son, Madison.”

And QPR said: “Everyone at QPR sends their deepest condolences, love and support to Matt Smith and family following the tragic passing of his baby son, Madison. We’re all with you Smudger.”

Ahead of his return to management duties, Bruce then stated: “On Tuesday we laid my grandson Madison to rest. It’s been the worst time of my family’s entire lives and is something no family should have to endure.

“I’d like to take this opportunity on behalf of all the family to thank everyone for the tributes and messages from inside and outside the footballing world.

“It has touched us all. I’d also like to thank David, Julian, and the owner Simon for their understanding and support. I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday at Gillingham, and back at Bloomfield Road. Look after your loved ones.”
