One stunning UK road trip has been named as the most attraction-dense road trip in the world, passing through idyllic villages, beautiful countryside and stately homes.
Using an online route planner, a study conducted by InsureandGo found which of the world’s most famous road trips have the highest density of attractions along the way – with the UK’s Peak District taking the top spot.
In second place was the beautiful Black Forest High Road in Germany, with Hana Highway in Maui, Hawaii, coming in third with its rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and ocean views.
And the Peak District wasn’t the only UK route to make the list, with Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coastal Route and Scotland’s Highland Tourist Route landing in the top ten at five and seven, respectively. While the Welsh Coastal Way came in at ninth.
Announcing that the Peak District had taken the top spot, the researchers at InsureandGo said: « This spectacular road trip weaves its way through beautiful English countryside, and includes highlights like the historic village of Bakewell, home of the world-famous Bakewell Pudding, the grand Chatsworth House (a historic home on many a traveller’s bucket list), and even one of the world’s most famous theme parks, Alton Towers. »
Another highlight of this route is the historic spa town of Buxton, with its stunning Georgian and Victorian architecture, healing waters and beautiful parks.
One pit stop visitors should be sure to make time for is the beautiful village of Castleton, home to a unique cave system and the ruins of Peveril Castle, believed to be one of the earliest Norman castles in the country, having been built shortly after 1066.
Literary fans may also want to make a stop at the town of Hathersage, which appears in Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, with the nearby North Lees Hall believed to have been the inspiration for Mr Rochester’s Thornfield Hall.
Also in Hathersage is the purported grave of Little John, one of Robin Hood’s merry men. Although there’s no evidence that Little John was a real person, the grave, which is located in St. Michael’s Church, is nevertheless an interesting location to visit.
This route is also perfect for fans of Pride and Prejudice, with the stunning Chatsworth House appearing as Pemberley in the 2005 film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.
While the nearby Haddon Hall appeared in the film as The Inn at Lambton. Haddon also appeared in the 1996 adaptation of Jane Eyre and 1998’s Elizabeth.
With all this and more, it’s clear why this 18-mile drive has topped the list as the most action-packed road trip in the world.
