Manchester United have launched an investigation into the club’s damaging team leaks, with derby hero Amad among the players interrogated, according to reports. Ruben Amorim wants to clamp down on why his selections are entering the public domain in advance, an issue that has impacted previous managers.
One United line-up surfaced on the internet the night before Sunday’s trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City. It turned out to be accurate.
The Red Devils almost suffered a third consecutive Premier League defeat for the first time since December 2015 before Bruno Fernandes and Amad’s late goals stunned Pep Guardiola.
Amorim’s side trailed 1-0 after Josko Gvardiol directed an unstoppable header past Andre Onana from Kevin De Bruyne‘s deflected cross in the first half.
But Amad drew a foul from Matheus Nunes for Fernandes’ equalising penalty before the 22-year-old winger kept his cool to notch a winning goal moments later.
After full-time, Amorim admitted that he was aware of the team leaks but conceded the problem was « impossible to fix. »
He explained: « You have a lot of people in the club, the players talk with agents, it is not a good thing. »
But the Portuguese head coach is giving it a good go, reportedly helming an inquiry into a potential mole, or moles, in the Carrington dressing room.
According to The Sun, United are investigating which players could be leaking information about Amorim’s selections.
As part of the process, it’s claimed that he has quizzed Amad and Alejandro Garnacho about their potential involvement.
The report adds that Amorim is satisfied that neither player is culpable of the malign murmurings that have added an extra layer of difficulty to his task at Old Trafford thus far.
Disgruntled supporters have aimed accusations at Garnacho’s brother, Roberto, on social media, given his outspoken nature on X.
However, the youngster has denied that he is the source, pouring cold water on the already baseless suspicions.
Amorim has made it abundantly clear that, should he find the individual(s) responsible, he will deal out punishment accordingly.
The 39-year-old excluded Marcus Rashford and Garnacho from his Manchester derby squad entirely, having been left unsatisfied by their recent form in matches and training.
Given the magnitude of United’s inner circle and operation as a whole, silencing the team news leaks is a daunting challenge that Amorim will unlikely complete.
Yet, success in doing so would go a long way in removing an advantage that opposition managers have enjoyed for far too long.
