Manchester United stars Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee have rallied around Marcus Rashford after he was dropped from the squad for the 2-0 victory over Manchester City. The England ace was a notable absentee from the cross-city clash on Sunday, alongside Alejandro Garnacho.
Despite the disappointment of missing out on the derby, Rashford took to Instagram to celebrate the win over Pep Guardiola‘s side, posting: « Yesssssssss! Love it lads, » along with two red heart emojis. His team-mates Ugarte and Zirkzee were quick to show their support, responding with heart emojis of their own.
Speaking after the match, head coach Ruben Amorim clarified: « It’s important to say why: was not a disciplinary thing.
« When people in our club are losing their jobs we have to put the standards really high and for that they have to fight for a place in the team. And today the team proved we can leave anyone out of the squad and manage to win if you play together. »
United defeated City at the Etihad Stadium to seal Amorim’s first major victory since his appointment in November. A dramatic ending saw them flip the game on its head.
Bruno Fernandes‘ penalty cancelled out Josko Gvardiol’s opener before Amad Diallo struck a stunning winner in added-time. City have won only one of their last 11 games.
