For those setting off for a Greek getaway, the Foreign Office has issued a series of reminders from passport regulations to potential criminal activities to be wary of. Among these warnings is a specific note for all tourists to tread with caution when taking photos.
According to government advisories, certain zones in Greece are strictly off-limits for photography. And ignoring this could lead to arrests and even court actions for offenders. The warning, which comes under the ‘using cameras or approaching sensitive locations‘ section says: « It is illegal to approach or take photos or videos of military installations, vehicles or buildings. »
It adds: « The authorities will arrest and possibly prosecute anyone doing so. Border areas are also militarily sensitive. If you visit such areas, do not take photos or videos. »
This comes as a timely alert for UK visitors going to Greece with an immediate health warning in light of a surge in Covid cases owing to the new FLiRT strain. The Greek National Public Health Organisation, EODY, has recorded a noticeable rise in hospital admissions, citing 669 fresh Covid-19 patients admitted between July 8 and 14, 2024.
At present, Greece doesn’t mandate PCR tests or proof of vaccination for incoming tourists. Still, if travelling to Greece is in your near future plans, keeping an eye on daily updates might come in handy in case any changes come into effect.
