Four of the best short-haul flights to book this autumn for a sunny getaway | Travel News | Travel

As schools have officially returned and many make their way back to the office after their summer break, Britons will be thinking of their next vacation.

Going abroad during autumn is the perfect escape from changing temperatures and claustrophobic social limitations apparent in many lives.

Fortunately, many regions are still warm despite the colder season with a few just a short-haul flight away.

So, grab your passports, pack those swimming costumes and get ready for a hot getaway with any of these five destinations.

Algarve, Portugal

Portugal is a country famed for its sunny weather, boasting around 300 days of sunshine a year.

It’s one of the sunniest countries in Europe with little rainfall.

Algarve is Portugal’s most southern region and is famed for its Atlantic beaches, picturesque fishing villages, sandy coves and friendly locals.

The average temperature in Algarve during the autumn season is 19C to 26C with the late-season allowing for plenty of sunbathing.

The average flight time between London and Algarve is just under three hours where you can enjoy sea kayaking, boat rides and dolphin spotting.

Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech in Morocco has grown in popularity over the years thanks in part to its vibrant market and food, beautiful gardens and rich culture.

But a primary reason to visit Marrakech in Autumn is the weather.

September, October and November see balmy temperatures of 18C to 31C.

The average flight time between London and Marrakech is just over three hours with grand markets, desert quad biking, Sahara desert tours and luxury hammam and spa experiences to enjoy.

Valletta, Malta

As many tourists pack up during summer, autumn in Malta comes alive with a host of festivals including classical concerts taking over.

Average temperatures in Malta in September and October are both dry and sunny and getting slightly humid in the afternoon.

Valletta is a harbour town with boutique hotels, back-alley wine bars and a raft of culinary influences.

The average flight time between London and Valletta is just over three hours where you can enjoy a host of museums, awe-inspiring architecture and historical buildings, making it the cultural hub of the Maltese islands.

Zante, Greece

Greece is a firm favourite among many autumn travellers and for good reason with the island of Zante, or Zykanthos, being a must-see.

The beaches around the region can still be enjoyed in September and October and best of all, no fighting for sun loungers.

September is usually warmer on the island than in May with temperatures between 20C and 25C.

The shoulder season is said to be the best time for outdoor activities as it is far less crowded with more peaceful beaches and scenery to take it all in.

The average flight time between London and Zante is three and a half hours where you can swim with the turtles, take a boat cruise, enjoy some paddleboarding or simply curl up to your favourite book looking across the lush sea views.
