Carlos Sainz has stated that he ‘doesn’t want to think about anything’ to do with Lewis Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari in 2025 and that he is instead fully focused on attempting to fight for a World Championship in his final season with the legendary Italian constructor.
With both Sainz and team-mate Charles Leclerc ending the 2023 campaign with one year left on their respective contracts, many expected team principal Fred Vasseur to hand the pair new contracts before the 2024 season kickstarts in Bahrain. However, this is not what transpired.
Instead, Ferrari handed Leclerc a long-term extension before completing a surprise move for seven-time world champion Hamilton in what will go down as one of the most sensational transfer sagas in F1 history. This, in turn, has left Sainz without a drive for the 2025 season, as things stand.
Speaking to Sky Italia about his feelings in the aftermath of the news, Sainz told Sky Italia: “It’s certainly not the best feeling to start the season. But the moment I put on the helmet in Bahrain and take to the track, the only sensation I’ll feel will be the desire to go faster and faster – and also aiming for victory in the world championship.
“I’m fine, don’t worry. I’m not disappointed. Experiencing Ferrari from the inside I already knew several things and I prepared myself with the team in view of future changes. As I said, however, I don’t want to think about anything other than giving my all in the season that awaits me with Ferrari.
“I’m calm. We know that we have a very important season ahead of us. This will be my last year in Ferrari, so I want to do the best I can: I’m also training with the karts to give my best when I’m on the track.”
While Sainz has now been left without a team for the 2025 campaign, the Spaniard still has plenty of options at his disposal and his stock is high following another steady season with Ferrari.
“I am aware of how much I am worth as a driver,” he continued. “For this reason, when I look to the future, I am very calm. Good things will definitely come, but for now, my goal is to give my best with Ferrari.
“In my career, I have always made steps forward. Improving more every year. This has always been and always will be my philosophy, and it will be the same this year. In 2024, I will turn 30 but I feel younger and more motivated than ever. »
