When people go on holidays, many head to Benidorm.
Known for its sandy beaches, party atmosphere and all around good times – it’s been a popular holiday hotspot for Brits for many years. But people have been warned about visiting the area due to a worrying problem.
A man, known as benidorm_grumet on TikTok, recently shared a video of people allegedly being targeted by pickpockets. Even though he said the area is safe, he admitted the crime is becoming a growing problem, as « vulnerable » people are being targeted.
He said people need to be « very careful » when visiting certain parts of the destination, as the problem isn’t going away. According to the local, some areas are particularly « dodgy », and should be avoided if you’re on your own.
In the clip, he noted many people have had their phones stolen this year, so it’s vital to be on your guard. Always be cautious when it comes to looking after your belongings.
The video has been viewed over 2,000 times since it’s been shared, and people were quick to comment too. Some admitted the problem has put them off going.
One person said: « I don’t want to go now. » Another wrote: « I’m coming out tomorrow and staying away from the strip. Old town and other side I’m staying. »
A third replied: « I got chased by two muggers while walking back to my hotel on my own one night there. »
Meanwhile, a fourth chimed in with: « It’s not safe. Don’t say it is. »
Nonetheless, the content creator said the strip is fine, but the back streets should be avoided if possible. Some areas appear to be more dangerous than others.
Some people said they’ve had no issues with the area though, and have really enjoyed their stays in Benidorm. It’s clear that everyone’s experiences have been different.
One wrote: « Been a couple of weeks ago. Was absolutely no problem for us. »
Another added: « I stayed opposite Tiki Beach. No issues at all. »
A third also replied: « I feel safer walking around Benidorm at night, when drunk, than I do when walking around Dublin city during the day when I’m sober. The hate comes from those who’ve never been to Benidorm. »
