Andy Murray’s full video message to Rafael Nadal has tennis fans cracking up | Tennis | Sport

Andy Murray‘s hilarious video message to Rafael Nadal following the Spaniard’s retirement has got people talking on social media. Nadal played the final match of his career on Tuesday as Spain were beaten by the Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarter-finals.

A number of celebrities and sporting figures have since paid tribute to Nadal, including the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams. Murray got in on the act by sending his own video message to Nadal on X (formerly Twitter).

In the video, which was shared by the official Davis Cup account, Murray said: « Hi Rafa, just wanted to send you a quick message to congratulate you on the most incredible career.

« I’ve always been a huge fan of yours and it has been incredible to watch you, to practice with you, and get the chance to compete against you for all these years since we first met as 13 and 14-year-old kids.

« The passion and intensity you played with, not just on the match court, but on the practice court was something I think all tennis players aspire to and what all tennis fans will remember you for. »

Murray added a humorous twist to his tribute by revealing that Nadal would get very frustrated when losing to his Scottish rival on the PlayStation between tennis matches.

« You are probably the only tennis player ever to have never thrown a racket in anger, which is incredible, however, this wasn’t the case when you would lose at PlayStation, » said Murray.

« I’ve seen Rafa throwing PlayStation controllers around hotel rooms all over the world when he and his close friend Juan Monaco would lose a late goal to me with his beloved Real Madrid at Pro Evolution Soccer.

« Anyway, I’m sure your body is looking forward to a well-earned rest. Enjoy retirement, mate. »

Many fans were delighted that Murray’s unique brand of humour was on full display, with @DanielKeevy posting: « I am shocked tennis broadcasters aren’t falling over themselves to get Andy on comms. The man has so many moments. »

@NajahNY said: « No-one touches Andy’s sense of humour. Love him, » while @nomatchwindyno added: « This is the funniest thing and I can’t stop thinking about it. »

« Oh, to have a friend with a sense of humour like Andy, » wrote @darkerromantic. @OpenCourt, meanwhile, said: « Andy ‘Taking the P**s’ Murray strikes again. How can you not love this guy? »
