Africa is establishing itself as a holidaymakers’ favourite for hot travel spots, and rightly so.

This North African gem provides plenty of Mediterranean vibes, mixed with an old-school charm, a rich culinary experience, and even street art steeped in history.
Djerba, an island off Tunisia, has been described as being a delightfully unorthodox region.
Take a trip to this stunning island and you’ll be met with white sandy beaches with whitewashed domed houses with plenty of olive groves and date palms scattered throughout.
In fact, the picture-perfect settings at Djerba meant it was used as a film location for part of the original Star Wars.
It’s impossible to discuss Djerba without mentioning the island’s stunning beaches.
Djerba has no less than 77.6 miles (125 km) of unspoiled beaches around the coastline with even the odd camel roaming about too.
Activities on offer include an array of watersports, sunbathing, or simply floating in the inviting ocean without a care in the world.
Nearby, Houmt Souk is a must-see and is the nearest thing to a city here.
There you can find the oldest synagogue in Africa, the El Ghriba Synagogue, as well as the Borj El Kebir fortress that dates back to the 15th century.
This spot is ideal for a stroll with Medieval fortresses, bazaars, and antique dens.
Thanks to Djerba’s rich blend of Arab and Berber cultures, the island provides a melting pot of culture and unique food.
Foodies visiting Djerba should try the region’s popular dish of zommita, a roasted barley flour dish that’s diluted with water and olive oil.
You can also try a sweet version of zommita known as bsissa.
A festive delicacy on the island is yahni – made with octopus or meat that’s simmered in pumpkin sauce and dried grapes.
Recalling their time in Djerba, one TripAdvisor reviewer said: “Clean and beautifully placed by a white sandy beach. »
Another added: “The food was absolutely beyond expectation, the beach was clean sand and fairly far flat wading but watch for heavy winds stirring up the ocean.”
