Jadon Sancho has come out in support of Marcus Rashford with the forward set to leave Manchester United. He was again axed from the squad by Ruben Amorim for his side’s 4-3 League Cup defeat at Tottenham on Thursday, throwing further doubt over his future.
The Portuguese boss insisted his decision was purely down to « selection, » and said the 27-year-old was not being punished for any off-field matters.
He also said after the game that he expected Rashford to train with the squad as normal for the rest of the week, and didn’t rule out picking him for Sunday’s match with Bournemouth. It comes after he admitted he was ready for a fresh challenge away from Old Trafford.
And now Sancho has reacted to quotes from Ian Wright, who has stuck up for the ex-England forward. « I got to Arsenal at 28, but you expect ME to write off someone with the ability Marcus has at 27!!!! » he wrote.
« So many of you are desperate to see these young people fail so that you can say you were right! You would take 1% of the career Marcus has had! »
Sancho, currently on loan from United at Chelsea, kept his reply short but pointed. Replying to ESPN posting the quote on X, he tagged the BBC pundit and added ‘voice’ and ‘100 per cent’ emojis.
Like Rashford, Sancho has also endured criticism at United for his apparent attitude and performance levels. He publicly fell out with former boss Erik ten Hag in September 2023 after the Dutchman claimed the winger had been dropped for his lack of application in training.
Sancho duly returned to former club Borussia Dortmund on a loan spell the following January. He did return to the United fold this summer, but the reunion proved short lived before another temporary move, this time to Stamford Bridge.
On Tuesday, Rashford gave an interview to esteemed football journalist Henry Winter, where he said the time was right for him to leave Old Trafford. He also insisted there would be « no hard feelings » if he was to depart the club he’d been at his whole career.
At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, travelling United supporters made their feelings on the transfer saga clear. They uneviled a banner that read: « Excuses. Ta ra Marcus ».
Rashford is currently contracted at United until the summer of 2028 after signing a lucrative new deal last year. Sancho, who moved to the Premier League for a £73million fee following the delayed Euro 2021 tournament, still has 18 months left on his own club deal.
