US President-elect Donald Trump‘s plan to end the war in Ukraine war has been revealed, according to a report.
Mr Trump secured a historic victory in the US elections on Wednesday, defeating Vice-President Kamala Harris and winning the popular vote in the process.
On several occasions, he has pledged to end the war as soon as he takes office, but has not outlined exactly what his preferred peace plan would look like.
Now, the Wall Street Journal reports that Mr Trump plans on freezing the conflict to set up a demilitarised zone.
This would mean Russia taking control of the Ukrainian territory that it still occupies now.
Mr Trump’s plan would also mean only European troops guarding the demilitarised zone while no American troops would be involved.
Ukraine would also be unable to join NATO for 20 years.
A source from the Trump team said: « We can do training and other support but the barrel of the gun is going to be European.
« We are not sending American men and women to uphold peace in Ukraine. And we are not paying for it. Get the Poles, Germans, British and French to do it. »
Kurt Volkner, a former adviser to Mr Trump on Ukraine, said the President-elect is « going to make a phone call to Putin as quickly as possible and tell Putin that he needs to stop the war, that the fighting has to stop, and that there has to be peace. »
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in response: « We have repeatedly said that the US is able to contribute to the end of this conflict.
« This cannot be done overnight, but… the US is capable of changing the trajectory of its foreign policy.
« Will this happen, and if so, how … we will see after (the US president’s inauguration in) January. »
This comes after Mr Trump was congratulated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after his US election win.
Mr Zelensky wrote on X: « I am looking forward to personally congratulating President Trump and discussing ways to strengthen Ukraine‘s strategic partnership with the United States. »
