A man who was flying over the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt with a powered paraglider was enjoying taking in the breathtaking views – but was left baffled by what he saw at the top.
You might expect to see the odd bird, but the last thing Alex Lang was expecting to see was a dog on top of the 455-foot structure. The paraglider, who was flying on October 14 2024, was so astonished he had to zoom in on the mysterious ‘pyramid pup’.
« A dog climbed all the way up the Great Pyramid of Giza! Do you think he lives up there?, » the Instagram user asked. After seeing the video, many social media users were left baffled by how the tiny creature had managed to climb to such a height. « How did he get up there?, » asked one concerned person. Another added: « I wonder how long it took him. I want him to come down and get some water. »
How the dog ended up there is still a mystery, but it’s belived the pooch may have been chasing birds and made his way up the structure.
In a statement, Lang said: « It wasn’t something I expected to see at all. I just saw some movement, and when I looked closer, I realized it was a dog – barking and chasing birds from the very top of the pyramid. »
In the video, which Alex posted to his socials and has since gone viral and been seen by over 925k people, he can be seen flying over the Pyramids of Giza, before he spots the canine. Viewers can see the dog wandering around in circles on the small flat area at the top of the ancient structure.
One social media user commented: « None of his friends are gonna believe him, » while another joked: « Not a dog. That is the Egyptian God Anubis. He is considered the guide of the dead in the afterlife and the protector of the tombs. That’s why it is over the pyramid. » And a third said: « He is more curious than humans in research of the Pyramid. »
Despite many being amused by the creature, some were also jokingly concerned, as climbing the Greata Pyramid, along with Egypt’s other 117 pyramids, is strictly forbidden for conservation and safety reasons. Obviously, while it’s against the law for humans to attempt the feat, it’s suspected the canine will be let off for his antics. One person joked: « This dog going to jail. »
It’s for this reason that many tourists take paragliding tours to see what lies at the top of the monument. The day after this astonishing discovery, a self-proclaimed ‘adventure athlete’ called Marshall Mosher also took to his paramotor to fly over the pyramid to see if the ‘dog god’ was still at the top and potentially ‘send help’. After flying over the Giza desert, he realised that the dog was no longer there, as he explained in a video posted on his Instagram account.
