Lisa Morales Duke, who amassed a large TikTok following for her travel insights, shared her surprise in a video. As she strolled through deserted streets, she remarked: « Almost everything, including grocery stores, is closed on Sundays. »
This revelation may seem dramatic, but for someone accustomed to the non-stop energy of the US, Spain’s tranquillity was startling. The clip has attracted thousands of views and sparked a conversation among viewers.
One commenter noted that Sunday in Spain is likely reserved for « church and family day ». Others also chimed in, with one saying: « The US is the rat race’s epitome. Enjoy life at a slower pace. »
Another added: « I feel this is the way it’s supposed to be. » Meanwhile, a third suggested: « Well, we need to rest some days. Sunday is the perfect one, just relax at home or go for a walk. »

Some might be surprised to learn that in Spain, the majority of shops shut their doors on Sundays. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule, with some specialist stores in tourist hotspots and big shopping malls, opening for reduced hours on the traditional day of rest.
Additionally, the Spanish custom of « siesta » sees businesses closing for lunchtime breaks during the week as well.
