A spin-off from Wicked appears to have been ‘confirmed’ following a revelation from one of the creative minds behind the blockbuster film and its theatrical sequel.
Composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz has reportedly disclosed that he is developing a project ‘within the world of Oz’.
The 77 year old, who crafted the music for the Broadway production and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Winnie Holtzman, has hinted at the new venture.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he commented: « It’s a little bit premature to discuss, but not that premature.
« It is not a Wicked sequel, but it is a story which, if it goes ahead, occurs within the world of Oz.
« It’s so early, I’m hesitating to say anything about it, because who knows if it’ll even go forward. »
Wicked: For Good recently arrived in cinemas, continuing from where its predecessor concluded by bringing the musical’s second act to life. The narrative follows Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) after she uncovers the Wizard of Oz’s (Jeff Goldblum) deception regarding his abilities and his campaign to brand her a villain.
Ultimately, Glinda (Ariana Grande) must decide where her loyalties lie – with her closest companion or the Wizard , reports the Mirror.
Schwartz has now earned dual Golden Globe nominations for his original compositions, No Place Like Home and The Girl In The Bubble. The project he is currently pursuing was reportedly pitched to him prior to either film’s theatrical debut.
Responding to news of the nomination, he remarked: « I am pleased that both songs were considered worthy. »
Yet he also admitted his regret that Jon M. Chu, who directed both pictures, failed to secure recognition himself.
He continued: « I have to say, I’m quite disappointed that Jon himself wasn’t nominated, because I feel he’s done such an exceptional job on both this movie and the first movie and was such an inspiring leader that I wish it had been possible for him to be recognised as well. »
Chu has recently disclosed there are « a lot of ideas » circulating about a possible third instalment in the Wicked series, and he’s willing to entertain discussions should he be asked to take charge once more.
Speaking to Variety, he stated: « I’d say, ‘What is it about?’ We have a lot of ideas flying around right now. »
The director revealed his eight year old daughter is particularly keen on an origin tale centring on Jonathan Bailey’s character, Fiyero Tigelaar.
« My daughter’s already writing one, she’s eight years old. She wrote this whole beginning that I actually really love. But we’ll see, let’s enjoy this ride first. »
Wicked draws from novels by Gregory Maguire, who has confirmed he’s completed a prequel of his own. The forthcoming title, Galinda: A Charmed Childhood, is slated for publication next year.
While plot specifics remain scarce, the book is anticipated to delve into Glinda’s early years prior to becoming Elphaba’s cherished roommate at Shiz University.
Wicked is streaming on Sky Cinema and NOW, Wicked For Good is in cinemas now.
