What King Charles’s statement on Andrew really means – why timing is unprecedented | Royal | News

A leading royal expert believes King Charles’s latest statement, released February 8, « sounds like an invitation to help the police » who are investigating allegations surrounding Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Thames Valley Police has said it is assessing claims that Andrew shared confidential documents with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, while the former duke served as UK trade envoy. The former prince denies any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein.

Royal expert, Richard Fitzwilliams, exclusively told Express.co.uk: « Andrew has not testified before Congress as requested. Evidence which shows he lied about his dealings with Epstein, as did his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, has dominated the news with appalling photographs, new sleazy allegations and serious charges of sending Epstein confidential information when Trade Envoy. »

Emails included in the latest tranche of Epstein files released by the US Department of Justice last month showed that the disgraced former prince shared reports on official visits to Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Singapore in 2010, when he was acting as a UK global trade envoy. An email from November 2010 appeared to have been forwarded by Andrew just a few minutes after it was sent by his then-special advisor, Amir Patel.

The extent of Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein has also been highlighted in the latest release of Epstein files. Many of the emails from Ms Ferguson were sent after Epstein was convicted in 2008 for procuring a child for prostitution and of soliciting a prostitute.

Describing Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah, Mr Fitzwilliams said: « The two of them seem to me to be shockers who deserve each other. » Both she and Andrew are mentioned several times in the files – but this does not imply wrongdoing.

Earlier this evening, in an unprecendented move, Buckingham Palace released a statement, addressing the police investigation which stressed, « While the specific claims in question are for Mr Mountbatten-Windsor to address, if we are approached by Thames Valley Police we stand ready to support them as you would expect. »

Commenting on the statement, the royal expert added: « This sounds like an invitation to help the police who are investigating. It is especially unprecedented during a royal visit abroad, Prince William being in Saudi Arabia, but reflects a realisation that things cannot go on as they are.

« The Waleses’ statement came first, which is significant too. William is obviously asserting himself. It is an urgent  matter, as the monarchy’s reputation is at stake. »

Today, Prince William embarked on a hugely important trip on behalf of the UK government, in Saudia Arabia, while the King conducted engagements in Lancashire.
