Following a nationwide taste test of fish and chips, Fry Magazine unveiled its annual rankings of the UK’s finest chippies and seafood restaurants earlier this year – with a Belfast city centre establishment claiming one of the top spots.
Nestled in the heart of Northern Ireland’s bustling capital, Fish City has become a magnet for shoppers, tourists and food enthusiasts alike, all seeking sustainably sourced seafood. The local favourite earned its place on the prestigious top 10 list after judges awarded it an impressive 96% or higher across all essential criteria.
Located on Ann Street, this award-winning establishment prides itself on championing locally sourced produce. Beyond this latest recognition, Fish City has accumulated an enviable collection of honours, including Belfast’s Best Eatery and Northern Ireland’s Seafood Establishment of the Year.
One recent diner took to TripAdvisor to rave: « Really special fish and chips. Everything is so fresh, and we all said it was the best fish and chips ever. Wine is also delicious. »
Meanwhile, another delighted patron said that Fish City delivers « the real taste of fish and chips ». They revealed: « It was a very nice experience to taste food with quality and quantity at a reasonable price. Seafood is very authentic in taste, especially the cod fish, which was fabulous. Very nice atmosphere, feels like high-standard service, and my family were delighted after visiting this place. »
Despite the family-run establishment attracting considerable acclaim, it’s a relative newcomer, having launched in 2013 rather than being a decades-old fixture in the community. However, its commitment to eco-friendly practices has earned it a stellar reputation amongst local food enthusiasts. Indeed, it clinched the title of Britain’s healthiest and most sustainable fish and chip shop.
One diner labelled their visit « exceptional », noting: « The fresh oysters-oh my word, they were off the charts and delicious with all the different dressings; the staff said they come from Carlingford. My husband really enjoyed his Thai ginger broth; it was full of fish and shellfish and very tropical.
« We weren’t sure which dessert to go for, and our super friendly waitress recommended the sticky toffee pudding with whisky ice cream, and we enjoyed it so much. » With hundreds of glowing testimonials for this neighbourhood treasure, the credibility of this ranking is undeniable.
