Trump tariffs: Plan to hit UK, Denmark and other European countries ov | UK | News

Donald Trump has announced that the UK and other European countries will be hit with a 10% tariff “on any and all goods” sent to the US from February 1 until a deal is reached to buy Greenland. In a lengthy Truth Social post, the US President said: “Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland have journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown”, adding: “This is a very dangerous situation for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet.”

Trump says these will remain in place until « such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland ». He added that these will be increased to 25% on June 1.

“This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” he added.

Trump doubled down on his warning that China and Russia want Greenland, saying “there is not a thing that Denmark can do about it ».

Tariffs are taxes applied to imported goods and are typically paid to the government by companies that bring foreign products into the country.

Trump claimed on Truth Social that the US has effectively subsidised Denmark and the European Union for years by refraining from imposing tariffs on them.

« We have subsidized Denmark, and all of the Countries of the European Union, and others, for many years by not charging them Tariffs, or any other forms of remuneration. Now, after Centuries, it is time for Denmark to give back — World Peace is at stake! »

Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch has described Trump’s plans to impose tariffs on European countries as  » completely wrong ».

Posting on social media she said: « President Trump is completely wrong to announce tariffs on the UK over Greenland. People in both UK and US will face higher costs.

« These tariffs will be yet another burden for businesses across our country. The sovereignty of Greenland should only be decided by the people of Greenland. On this, I agree with Keir Starmer. »

Trump is attempting to justify taking control of the island due to its strategic location, abundant mineral resources, and increasing Russian and Chinese military activity in the region.

Trump first floated buying Greenland during his first term and revived this idea during his 2024-2025 presidential campaign.
