Donald Trump has said the United States needs Greenland for « national security and even world security », as he continued to face questions over his push to acquire the Arctic territory.
Speaking to reporters following a White House briefing, Mr Trump was asked whether the potential break-up of NATO would be a price worth paying for Greenland.
He replied: « I think that we will work something out where NATO is going to be very happy, and where we’re going to be very happy, but we need it for security purposes – national security and even world security. »
The US president also played down fears of escalation, saying talks were continuing and expressing confidence that the situation would be resolved.
He added: « We have a lot of meetings scheduled on Greenland. I’m leaving tonight for Davos, and I think things are going to work out pretty well. »
