Tragic discovery made in Spain during search for pensioner | World | News

A body believed to be that of a missing British woman has been found hidden under vegetation by a motorway in southern Spain. A massive air and land search was launched for 73-year-old Geraldine Ann after she vanished from her home in Chirivel near Granada on September 17.

She was said to have left the property late at night in pyjamas and flip-flops to feed some cats after a row with her husband, who formally reported her missing the following day. Police sources said this morning they were awaiting the results of definitive DNA tests but confirmed everything was pointing to the dead woman being Geraldine.

Chirivel Town Hall said in a statement: “We profoundly regret to have to inform you that a body has been found by the A-92 motorway thought be that of our neighbour Geraldine, pending official confirmation from the authorities.”

Drones were used in the search for the missing Brit, who lived in a hamlet called Contador, which is part of the municipality of Chirivel.

Chirivel mayor, Jose Torregrosa Mota, said in an appeal shortly after the pensioner vanished: “She suffered from senile dementia and the night she went missing she’d apparently had a small argument with her husband and left home.”

He went on to thank the likes of the Civil Guard and local police from both Chirivel and the neighbouring municipality of Cullar, where Geraldine’s body ended up being found, just over a mile from her property, as he revealed sniffer dogs would be used.

A specialist mountain rescue Civil Guard unit called the GREIM took part in the operation.

Volunteers including other British expats are also understood to have looked for the missing OAP, whose disappearance was heavily publicised on social media and by a Spanish missing persons association called SOS Desaparecidos.

A month after Geraldine’s disappearance, her local town published another appeal saying: “Although the advanced control room is no longer operative, the search goes on.

« We call on everyone, especially farmers and sports enthusiasts to keep their eyes peeled.”

Police said today they weren’t treating the death as suspicious at this stage.
