Millions of people visit the Lake District every year hoping for a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, many of these tourists tend to stick to the busy areas of Windermere, Kendal, and Ambleside, meaning they may not find their strolls as quiet as they hoped – and they miss out on some of the lesser-known areas that the national park has to offer.
One hidden gem located in the South Lakes area is Clappersgate, a peaceful village located on the outskirts of Ambleside. Jerry Rebbeck, a local expert at Wheelwrights Holiday Cottages, has sung the town’s praises, recommending it as a base for anyone visiting the area. He said: « Clappersgate has great access to the River Brathay, making it a great spot for adventurous visitors who want to paddleboard or kayak towards Waterhead or further onto Windermere.
« If you are not the adventurous type, you can enjoy the majestic riverside setting, taking in the views with a tipple of your choice or a book in a more secluded area.
If walking is more your thing, there are fantastic hikes from your doorstep in Clappersgate up to the Loughrigg Circular, which has some spectacular views down Windermere, and is also a great lower-level walk when the clouds rule out the higher fells. »
While it may be a small village, Clappersgate is packed full of history, with many historic structures, including the notable Clappersgate Bridge.
The Grade II listed bridge dates back to the 17th century and is a popular spot to visit for hikers in the area, thanks to its views over the river and surrounding greenery.
Jerry continued: « Clappersgate also has convenient access to nearby indoor activities, making it a brilliant place for families to stay in case of those unexpected rainy days, including the Lake District Aquarium and a neo-gothic Wray Castle.”
« There are lovely historic houses and holiday cottages in Clappersgate for those wishing to stay in the area.
« The village is tucked away from the crowds, yet within easy reach of numerous landmarks and boasts stunning scenery – offering the perfect balance between relaxation and exploring the Lakes. »
