With travel a top priority for many Brits, safety is a key factor for holidaymakers as they figure out where in the world they’re off to next – and this quiet spot could be a top contender. Recent research conducted by International SOS has named the world’s safest destinations for travellers.
Whilst Iceland retained its position at the very top of the list, another relatively overlooked nation secured the runner-up spot in the rankings. Luxembourg, amongst Europe‘s most prosperous nations, was declared the second safest travel destination globally. Thanks to the nation’s minimal crime statistics, political stability and negligible health hazards, it secured its position amongst some of the top-ranked countries.
But what is there on offer for visitors travelling to Luxembourg, aside from a time spent feeling relaxed in a safe environment? Although it ranks among Europe’s most compact nations, it does in fact boast an array of numerous activities for holidaymakers.
The capital’s premier attraction is Vianden Castle, recognised as one of Europe’s most impressive fortified strongholds. It sits in the country’s northern region. A visitor on TripAdvisor claimed: « I grew up in Luxembourg and visited this castle when we were kids. I recommend making a day of it and exploring the surrounding walks to get a good view of the castle. »
Another must-see location is La Chemin de La Corniche, amongst Luxembourg’s historic districts and an excellent area for pedestrian exploration. One traveller noted: « Beautiful walk along the balcony of Europe. Gorgeous photo spots all along the way. »
At this time of year, the magical city offers Christmas markets which form part of the Winterlights festival, offering an impressive blend of festive food as well as crafts and activities across several locations, including Place d’Armes, Constitution Square, and Place de Paris. Not to mention, it houses a giant Ferris wheel which offers unmatched city views.
On visiting the Place d’Armes, a review reads: « This is an open square with everything you can want in a square. At the time I visited, the Christmas market was up. The square has performers, shops and an open-air market for all. Many visitors go to this square for the ambience. It is in the heart of the city and is quite lively. You can sit and just enjoy the scenery.
In addition to the country’s many perks, it just so happens that its public transport operates completely free of charge throughout Luxembourg. This means visitors can access the nation’s key attractions without spending a single penny on travel.
