The untouched island just as pretty as neighbouring Crete | Travel News | Travel

A lesser known Greek island has all the charm and beauty as neighbouring Crete but without the heaves of tourists.

Boasting a rich history and located next to the island of Karpathos, Kasos is the southernmost island of the Dodecanese group.

Also known as Tzia, the island sits on the Aegean Sea’s popular Cyclades archipelago, and boasts a wild and rugged beauty, fascinating local traditions and a wealth of cultural delights.

With a population of 1,223 permanent residents this small island is off the beaten path, allowing those who adventure there to enjoy a holiday far from the crowds.

This hidden gem has all the elements holidaymakers look for in a Greek island such as its beautiful beaches, traditional villages and friendly people but due to the difficulty and time getting here it has remained largely untouched.

Sitting midway between Crete and Rhodes, people who come to this rocky island can’t help but fall in love with its authentic and vibrant food culture.

This quaint island has an array of warm and welcoming tavernas to relaxing beachfront spots, providing the perfect place to savor Kasos’ culinary delights.

Originating from Kasos, hand-made dolmadakia are a classic Greek dish from the island of Kasos. These small, cone-shaped vine leaf wraps are often served at festivals and weddings.

Kasos is also known for staka, this soft creamy cheese is a treat to have whilst overlooking the turquoise seas.

The port of Fry is the capital of the island and where you will arrive if you come by ferry. Here you will find dozens of cafes, restaurants and bars and a number of small, traditional family run hotels.

In Mbouka, the old harbour, you will find lines of fishing boats and several eateries overlooking the sea. You can also take various boats from this harbour that sail around the beautiful island.

If you are someone who appreciates good food then you will need to head to Emborios, the old commercial harbour of Kasos, which has the best restaurants on the island.

Emborios boasts a small white sandy beach andhas an early Christian Church dedicated to the Panagia which is the biggest on the island. Nearby in the village of Panagia lies the 18th Century Church of Pera Panagia where the August 15 celebration of the Virgin Mary takes place.
