A charming little city that is often overshadowed by its famous neighbours is named among the best to visit this year. Ripon, a city steeped in history, is located in North Yorkshire, England. Placed very close to popular tourist cities such as York and Newcastle, the city is sometimes neglected by the holidaymakers.

Swerve further west, and explore its characterful high street. Its pretty pubs and twice-weekly market are rightfully lauded, while nearby Fountains Abbey is one of the country’s most impressive ruins.

Dating back to the 7th century, Ripon cathedral has a rich heritage and beautiful architecture. It played a significant role in the development. It was originally founded as a monastery by Saint Wilfrid in AD 672. The current cathedral was constructed in the 12th century, replacing earlier versions that were damaged. Over time, Gothic elements were added, including stunning stained glass windows and intricate stone carvings.
One of the travellers wrote on TripAdvisor forum: “Wandered in at dusk having barely registered there was a cathedral in Ripon. Found an absolutely empty, still, and beautiful atmosphere alongside elegant, interesting, and stunning architecture.
“The crypt was ancient and had a story to tell. Do go. Even for non-cathedral lovers, it’s a treat. And they have a touch card donation machine too.”
Another popular tourist spot which is a must-visit in the city is Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water Garden. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 12th-century abbey ruin is breathtaking.
It also includes a Georgian water garden with scenic walks and wildlife spotting.
While the city is small, but it is home to several museums. Tourists can explore the Workhouse Museum, Prison & Police Museum, and Courthouse Museum.

Hackfall Woods is a hidden gem with stunning waterfalls, grottos, and scenic walking trails. Tourists can also enjoy peaceful canal walks and boat rides through Yorkshire’s countryside at Ripon Canal Walks.
Another traveller who has been to the wrote in the review: “Please, do go into this huge cathedral and find some very interesting details.
“The history of the building and surroundings was described on many embroidered cushions (recently made, around 2000, with amazing skill) along the two sides of the church.
“The choir has exceptionally beautiful wood carvings. But the most fantastic is a crypt where you find a small chapel dating back to 640 AD! (a time when Christianity had not even yet reached, the Netherlands; they had to wait till 750, when Bonifatius arrived and was killed by the barbarian Frisians).”
