Greece, renowned for its stunning island getaways, is a prime destination for hordes of holidaymakers seeking summer bliss. Out of approximately 6,000 islands, only 227 are inhabited, each offering a unique charm and atmosphere. However, a Greek native has warned tourists, advising them to steer clear of certain popular destinations. On Reddit, the local said: « I was born and raised in Greece. Avoid Mykonos, Santorini and other touristy places. »
They questioned the value of spending a fortune to snap photos of Santorini’s iconic sunsets or its picturesque hilltop houses, adding: « Yes, you want to take pictures of the beautiful sunset in Santorini and look at those picturesque houses on the hill – but do you really want to spend a lot of money on that? »
They warned: « And, I mean a lot of money. We Greeks avoid those places for their insane prices, generally referring to them as tourist traps. There are so many different islands in Greece you can visit. I suggest avoiding these two like the plague. »
They continued: « These places are very, very expensive in their prices for basic commodities and best suited for a three-day stay max, in my opinion. »
Mykonos and Santorini are renowned as some of Greece’s most costly islands owing to their immense popularity. Especially during the summertime, they attract hordes of overnight tourists as well as cruise passengers stopping by for a day trip.
While many encouraged a visit to the Greek capital, Athens, spending your entire vacation within the city may not be the best idea, according to one local on social media.
They said: « Seriously, don’t visit Greece and spend your entire stay in Athens. Take a bus and go on a trip, or a car or ferry and island hop nearby. »
