While seaside towns are great to visit during the warm summer months, they can often be very busy and crowded. Some of the most popular resorts, including Brighton and Blackpool, attract millions of visitors every year.
With that in mind, it’s worth considering some quieter coastal locations to visit this summer. Among those is the beautiful Bigbury-on-Sea. Tucked away on the South Devon coast, the village is popular among families, beach lovers and walkers. It offers a stunning sandy beach and access to the famous Burgh Island.

The Fethiye Times recently named Bigbury-on-Sea as one of the most relaxing seaside locations in the UK. The publication cited the village’s sweeping beach, calm waters and quiet atmosphere.
The large expansive beach at Bigbury-on-Sea is perfect for families. As well as being easily accessible, there is plenty of space to enjoy and a number of rock pools for the children.
The area is also known for its watersports, with facilities for surfing and paddleboarding hire. It is also an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and there is access to the popular South West Coast Path routes.
From Bigbury-on-Sea, visitors can reach Burgh Island by tidal access. Visitors can be transferred to the island, famous for its iconic 1930s Art Deco hotel, by a unique sea tractor at high tide.

The Fethiye Times said: « The jewel in the crown is Bigbury-on-Sea Beach — a beautiful stretch of golden-white sand with its own tidal island, Burgh Island. At low tide, visitors can walk across the sand to reach the island, creating a unique and memorable coastal experience. »
It added: « The calm, clear waters make the beach perfect for swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking, while the gently sloping shoreline is ideal for families with young children. During summer, lifeguards are often on duty, adding extra peace of mind for visitors.
« Surrounded by dramatic coastline, the area is also a fantastic starting point for scenic coastal walks, with views stretching across South Devon’s rugged shoreline. »
‘Bigbury-on-Sea is a bit of a jackpot’
Bigbury-on-Sea has a high rating on TripAdvisor. Many visitors have noted the stunning beach and suitability for families, with one describing the area as a « bit of a jackpot ».
Mike Wood said: « Superb beach, firm sand, rock pools. We visited at low tide so quite a trek to the sea.
Large car park on 2 levels. Cafe & toilets. Midweek in March and the car park was around 20% full. Can imagine problems during busy times. High recommend for fogeys or families. »
Markmark292 wrote: « Bigbury-on-Sea is a bit of a jackpot if you’re after a dog-friendly beach with food and drink options within stumbling distance. You can either stroll across to Burgh Island and the Pilchard Inn, where they serve excellent chips (the sort you pretend you’ll ‘share’ but don’t), alongside a solid selection of lagers and other beverages… or simply pop into the Venus Café just below the main car park. »
