According to the Global Peace Index for 2024, Mauritius topped the list as the safest country in Africa with a ranking of 1.546 on the Global Peace Index (as of data from 2023), coming in 22nd globally, compared to Spain which ranked just below in 23rd place.
The latest GPI report featured 163 countries, ranking each country’s level of safety or danger based on 23 indicators. These include the number of internal and external violent conflicts, distrust, and political instability, among others. Mauritius has just a three-hour time difference from the UK, meaning jetlag is basically non-existent. Visitors can laze on powdery beaches, see dramatic waterfalls and towering mountains, or simply sample the local rum. They can snorkel among the diverse sealife in Blue Bay Marine Park, or choose to stay afloat in a glass-bottom boat, where the view is almost just as good thanks to the crystal-clear water.
The lush rainforest of Black River Gorges National Park is known for its incredible flora and fauna, where birds such asecho parakeets, pink pigeons and Mauritius kestrels can be seen.
While in the park, you can trek to Alexandra waterfall or explore the trails, and the Macchabée or Gorges viewpoints reward everyone with unforgettable views.
Luxurious resorts can be found in Flic en Flac, a small village on the island’s western coast, which is one of the most popular destinations. The millionaire’s playground of Grand Baie is equally as opulent.
The geological park of Chamarel Seven-Coloured Earth is a must-see, where seven distinct colours of sand show the result of molten rock cooling over millions of years.
One village in Mauritus also had the quickest-growing millionaire population on the continent of Africa, which grew by 95% between 2013 and 2023, according to Henley and Partners 2024 Africa Wealth Report.
Once an exclusive tourist spot known for its idyllic white beaches, Grand Baie is now home to some of the wealthiest business leaders who commute to nearby Port Louis for its international banks and insurance companies.
It takes about 12 hours to fly direct to Mauritius from the UK.
