A man was caught on camera trying to fight a stranger and swallow rosary beads while experiencing a « spiritual battle » on a flight to Florida. The American Airlines passenger, later identified as Delange Augustin, 31, reportedly believed a « satanic disciple » was being stowed away on the plane going from Savannah, Georgia to Miami. Flight attendants feared he was having a seizure as he began convulsing and acting erratically, but when one went to check on him, he kicked them in the chest, according to a criminal complaint and affidavit obtained by The Independent.
The documents revealed the incident occurred on March 10, when Augustin began « stomping, incoherent yelling, and shaking » in what « appeared to be a fit of epilepsy » while travelling with his sister, Medjina Augustin. The pilots agreed to return to Savannah after the attendant was sent flying across the aisle from the force of his kick. This, however, only enraged the passenger more.
Augustin then started « punching and kicking the seat and passenger in front of him » until the seat collapsed. Once the plane landed, he « stormed the front » with his sister before throwing « haymakers » at another flight attendant, « belting her upper arm ».
This prompted three passengers to intervene, pulling him and his sister to the ground while police arrived and subdued him.
Augustin was taken to hospital for assessment and for « the ingestion of rosary beads » – which Medjina said he did « because they are a weapon of strength in the spiritual warfare ».
She told authorities they were on their to Haiti « to flee religious attacks of a spiritual nature ». She said « the evil comes out in the darkness » and she « had never experienced as much darkness as was on the plane that evening ».
Fellow passenger Rob Rosenberg believed the brother and sister were « possessed » after he began chanting and speaking of devils.
He told CBS Miami: « They were possessed. That was a very, very, very disturbing scene. I’ve seen a lot of stuff in my life, but that was probably the most disturbing thing I’ve ever seen.
« He started stomping his feet violently, like heavily and screaming – it was kind of a chant. He was talking about devils and possession. You have to kind of see-it-to-believe-it sort of thing.
« He was being so violent, you were like, this is not normal, he doesn’t care anymore. »
American Airlines said in a statement that it « appreciates the professionalism of the entire crew and thank our passengers for their understanding ».
