A teacher from an Australian high school has pleaded guilty to sleeping with a 15-year-old student. Karly Rae, 37, entered her plea after months of denying any sexual activity with the teenager.
She finally admitted that the pair had sex on several occasions in October 2024 in Newcastle, New South Wales. A court heard how the teacher had groomed the student using social media, where she exchanged messages with him on Snapchat and Instagram. « Maybe we could have one last rendezvous before school goes back. I’ll bring my toy, » she wrote in one message.
In another she confided it was « too tempting” to contact him on Snapchat.
Apparently concerned that their illicit relationship could be discovered, the 15-year-old suggested it might be a good idea to delete each other from the messaging app.
“It’s my fault. I take full responsibility. Do what you want / need, » she responded.
Later that month she was arrested by police, but released on bail. She is reported to have tried to get in touch with him five times in two hours, in a bid to influence his evidence.
“In the course of those calls, it’s alleged [she] sought to persuade the complainant to give a false version of events, » Justice Hament Dhanji said during the court session.
Officers re-arrested the teacher in June for a breach of a domestic violence order.
However, she was once again granted bail, after she was discovered to be pregnant and the pregnancy was considered to be at « high risk » due to previous miscarriages.
The identity of the baby’s father remains unclear, although the teenager is not believed to be the parent.
Rae decided to change her plea and confess to the sexual relationship, eight months after giving birth.
She has been sacked from her job and is not allowed to be alone with anyone under the age of 16. The court is expected to issue the sentence in March.
