Stunned Newcastle star Jacob Ramsey shown controversial red card vs Man Utd | Football | Sport

Jacob Ramsey was shown a controversial red card for Newcastle United against Manchester United after receiving a second yellow card for simulation despite not appealing for a penalty when he went down inside the box. Newcastle were reduced to 10 men in the first minute of first-half stoppage time. Ramsey went down after opposition goalkeeper Senne Lammens came rushing off his goal line.

Ramsey got a touch on the ball, but there did not appear to be any contact with Lammens. Yet Ramsey did not appeal for a spot-kick. United players surrounded referee Peter Bankes and Ramsey was shown a second yellow for allegedly diving. Ally McCoist said on TNT Sports’ co-commentary: « It’s an interesting one. Initially, when he goes down, I wasn’t sure he was looking for it.

« He knocks the ball by him, I’m not sure it’s a real effort to con the referee, to be honest with you. I know he goes to ground, but there’s no way he’s giving a penalty. « Is he just trying to get out of the road? Is he off-balance? That’s a really interesting one. Does he touch him there, and it just knocks him off balance a little bit? »

Shay Given said at half-time: « I think when you look at the goalkeeper’s reaction, he pulls his [hands back], I think there’s coming together there, and human reaction from Lammens is like ‘I’ve touched him, but it’s not a penalty.’

« I think it’s very harsh to give a second yellow card for that, I think there’s a slight coming together. I’m not saying it’s a definite penalty, but I do think it’s extremely harsh to get sent off for that. »

Owen Hargreaves added: « There’s like a hesitation when he goes down, I think it’s harsh as well, but because he doesn’t go down when the keeper is out, he takes a step, takes a second and then just collapses. I think that’s what they’ve seen, but I think it’s harsh as well. »

Given also said on the first yellow card, when Ramsey pulled back Casemiro: « Why’s he getting booked so early? It’s a needless foul on the halfway line, there’s no danger, so I think that’s an easy decision. »

It was a wild finish to the first half as Anthony Gordon scored from the spot after being fouled by United captain Bruno Fernandes inside the box. But the Portuguese playmaker delivered the free-kick that Casemiro equalised from in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
