The Southport killer has reportedly had the restrictions on his time in prison relaxed. Axel Rudakubana is serving 52 years in jail after murdering Alice Da Silva Aguiar (nine), Elsie Dot Stancombe (seven), and Bebe King (six) at the dance class in July last year. In HMP Belmarsh, he was reportedly kept in solitary confinement after throwing boiling water at a guard using his kettle, which was then taken away from him. Rudakubana has now had other restrictions relaxed, meaning he can be among other prisoners, exercise regularly, and make phone calls. He also has a TV and reads Harry Potter books.
A source told the Sun: “Rudakubana is now allowed out more and not under such heavy escort. It doesn’t matter what prisoners have done, reviews have to be carried out and they have to be judged on recent behaviour. It is astonishing really and the public would be shocked. He has a TV and DVD player in his cell and makes regular calls including to his parents.”
Rudakubana also has regular visits from an imam. The source said: “The imam teaches him the real meaning of Islam. He talks to him about rejecting violence and is trying to de-radicalise him.”
The killer is also having sessions with psychologists and therapists. The Prison Service said: “We do not comment on individuals.”
Axel Rudakubana murdered three young girls and stabbed several others at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club in Southport last summer.
In January, the teenager was sentenced to a minimum of 52 years in prison for the “sadistic” murders which were described in court as “shocking” and “pure evil”.
In September, an inquiry revealed that Rudakubana had been released from mental health services just six days before the attack. He was described as “isolated” and obsessed with knives and extreme violence.
Rudakubana was expelled from school and referred three times to the counter-radicalisation scheme Prevent. He was interviewed by counter-terrorism officers but was not escalated as a concern because he had no firm ideology.
