Just a stone’s throw away from the bustling tourist hotspot of Whitmore Bay in Barry, there’s a tranquil retreat free from the crowds. As spring begins to bloom, this secluded bay offers the perfect spot to soak up the sun or witness a stunning sunset.
Jackson’s Bay, just a brisk 15-minute walk from Redbrink Crescent, is a hidden gem offering shelter from the wind, pristine coastal views and dog-friendly beaches all year round. With public toilets, a quaint coffee shack and even a wood-fired sauna on site, it’s an idyllic location for a peaceful picnic or a relaxing day out. Access to this secret cove can be gained via a picturesque coastal walk around the headland from Whitmore Bay on the Clements Colley Walk.
However, it’s advisable to check tide times as the path may not always be accessible during high tide. There’s also a steep path that will lead you directly to the bay.
Parking options are limited at Redbrink Crescent, with a few free two-hour spots available at the top of the stairs. Nell’s Point car park is another option, located just a short stroll away. For those opting for public transport, Barry Island train station is a mere 10-minute journey away.
Situated near Barry Yacht Club and Lifeboat Station, the Knotty Yachty hut offers a range of refreshments. Here, you can enjoy a local brew from the Welsh Coffee Co., treat your dog to a puppuccino, or savour a panini.
The hut also serves tea, hot chocolates, smoothies, milkshakes, pastries, cakes, hot dogs, sausage rolls, and pasties. It’s open Wednesday to Sunday from 8.30am until 2.30pm during the off-peak season and 8.30am until 4.30pm in peak seasons.
The sandy bay is also an ideal spot for a year-round dip in the sea, with the opportunity to warm up afterwards in Mor a sawna. This wood-burning sauna provides stunning views and shelter from the elements, making it a perfect escape just half an hour from Cardiff city centre.
The tranquil sauna accommodates up to 10 people and can be booked for private or communal sessions. Prices for a 55-minute session range from £12 for a communal session to £100 for private hire, with opening times varying throughout the week.
You can experience the hot hut in various ways, from quiet sessions to wellness Wednesdays and sauna and silent disco sessions. If you become a fan, you can even opt for a membership.
Opened in July last year, the sauna also features a cold plunge pool and cold showers to offer hot and cold contrast therapy.
Despite being less bustling than Whitmore Bay, Jackson’s Bay is far from lacking in activities. Thanks to its proximity to Barry yacht club, it often hosts stand-up paddle boarding lessons and offers a prime spot for rock-pooling or beach sports.
While Barry’s main beach enjoys widespread fame, Jackson’s Bay remains a hidden treasure, providing a more tranquil beach experience.
