Queen Camilla and King Charles had a stark difference of opinion when it came to her new title, a royal expert has claimed.
According to The Times’s Tom Quinn, one staff member recounted a heated discussion about royal titles, revealing: « One member of staff told me that at one point, Queen Camilla hated the idea of being queen and would regularly say to Charles: « Can’t we get away from all this protocol? It’s all b******s.’ »
When confronted with such colourful language, His Majesty, who is not particularly fond of profanity, would reportedly respond: « You’re doing it [becoming queen] for me, darling. »
Queen Camilla’s background may be aristocratic, but she’s recognised for her playful wit, punctuated by irreverent humour. Vanity Fair received insight from Royal biographer Penny Junor, who said: « She always has a twinkle in her eye and is a terrible giggler, often reducing Charles to fits of giggles too, » reports Cambridgeshire Live.
The royal harboured no grand dreams of global travel or carving out a high-powered career path; according to Junor’s portrayal in her biography: « She wanted no more from life than to be happily married to an upper-class man and live a sociable life in the country with horses, dogs, children, and someone to look after them all and do the hard graft. »
The deep bond with Charles, Junor adds, was based on Queen Camilla’s refusal to stand on ceremony: “She treated him like a normal person, as she had when they were together, and if ever he behaved badly, or was selfish or thoughtless, she wasn’t afraid to tell him so. She was a proper friend.”
Charles was instantly smitten with the high-class equestrian he encountered at a polo match, according to Junor. « He loved the fact that she smiled with her eyes as well as her mouth, and laughed at the same silly things as he did, » the royal author wrote in The Duchess: The Untold Story.
« He also liked that she was so natural and easy and friendly, not in any way overawed by him, not fawning or sycophantic. In short, he was very taken with her, and after that first meeting he began ringing her up. »
By contrast, Charles’s sons Prince Harry and Prince William took quite a while to warm up to their stepmother, initially referring to her by a range of unkind nicknames.
However, Princess Kate takes immense delight in reminding her husband that Queen Camilla is descended from Alice Keppel, the favourite mistress of King Edward VII – a monarch who William increasingly resembles. Buckingham Palace has been contacted for comment.
