Russia’s « Doomsday Radio » has sent out as many as 15 cryptic messages over the last week, triggering fears of a potential World War Three. The mysterious radio channel, known as UVB-76, has broadcast a number of recent transmissions in code, including PEPPER SHAKER, TRANSFER, PABODOLL, SPINOBAZ, FRIGORIA, OPALNY, SNOPOVY, and MYUONOSVOD.
The station has been operating since the 1970s and mostly plays a constant, eerie buzzing sound. Although the meaning of the secret messages remains a mystery, experts believe that UVB-76 is used by Russia‘s military to send orders to their armed forces. The codes typically increase in frequency during global crises which has sparked fears this week of a wider war.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Al Carns, British Military Intelligence Service (MIS) Defence Minister, warned that the « shadow of war is knocking on Europe’s door ». He added that UK and its NATO allies must be ready during a speech in Berlin on Thursday (December 11).
He said: « Russia has brought war back to Europe, and we must be prepared for the scale of war our grandparents and great grandparents endured. »
Over the last week, the « Doomsday Radio », also known as « The Buzzer », transmitted three signals on Monday (December 8) followed by eight more on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the station broadcasted prolonged bursts of Morse code on Friday (December 12).
One listener said on social media that the newest batch of codes were very strange. The Russian-speaker explained how they usually come one at a time rather than in clusters.
They posted on X: « It is interesting that as many as 15 messages were sent at once, even though the usual interval is once a month or every two months. »
On November 14, state media organization Izvestia revealed the radio went offline after a Ukrainian drone strike damaged nearby power stations. The station has since churned out waves of new messages, including a batch of six on November 17.
Among these was one that read: « NZHTI NZHTI 15854 LATVIA 5894 4167. » The direct naming of Latvia sparked panic as tensions between Russia and NATO remain high.
