Princess Kate’s uncle was ambushed with a question about her moments before he entered the Celebrity Big Brother house tonight. But his light-hearted response won the humour of keen viewers.
Hosts of the ITV1 show, AJ Odudu, 36, and Will Best, 39, asked: « The nation needs to know, will Kate be watching? » To which Gary Goldsmith, 58, replied: « If she is, it’ll be behind the sofa, I guess! » Following on from the admission, the hosts probed again: « Which sofa though? »
The businessman retorted: « It’ll be a nice one in a nice house. I can guarantee that. » Princess Kate is currently recovering from abdominal surgery – and it is not known if the mum-of-three will be tuning in. She was spotted out today for the first time in weeks in the front passenger seat of Carole Middleton’s 4×4.
Following Gary’s comments, one royal fan said: « Poor Catherine. As someone with an embarrassing (albeit lovable) uncle, I can relate. » Celebrity Big Brother has returned to UK television tonight for the first time in six years.
In the promo video, Gary Goldsmith explains he is « uncle to the future Queen of our country, Catherine Middleton, the current Princess of Wales. »
He tells the tale of when he first met Prince William, « Catherine was cooking » and William asked if he « wanted a cup of tea ».
Gary is a businessman based in London who made his money in IT and recruitment. As the brother of Carole Middleton, he is the uncle of the Princess of Wales, as well as her siblings, Pippa and James Middleton.
The live show, fronted by presenters AJ Odudu and Will Best, began at 9pm today. To ensure they secured the best of the best for their very first series, ITV bosses are said to have splurged £2million on the diverse line-up which includes contestants such as Louis Walsh and Fern Britton.
Celebrity Big Brother will air seven nights a week on ITVX and celebrities will take part in nominations and tough tasks with cameras capturing their every move.
The TV appearance comes as Kate continues to recover from « planned abdominal surgery » which she underwent in January.
Kensington Palace forewarned she would be recovering for weeks and would not be set to return to public duties until after Easter, which is at the end of March.
The grainy pictures published by US website TMZ show the princess wearing sunglasses and a coat in the front of an Audi 4×4 as she was spotted near Windsor Castle.
The last time she was seen was on Christmas Day with her three children at the annual Sandringham church service.
