Summer is almost here, and people are beginning to plan their summer holidays. Living in the UK means we have access to some of the most beautiful places in the world on our doorstep, with iconic cities just a plane ride away.

However, a lot of these popular locations are now being inundated with tourists – and some have even more visitors than locals now. DiscoverCars.com has created a new ranking that compares the number of international tourists compared to the number of locals in European cities. Five of the most popular holiday destinations now have more visitors than locals.

The first is Dubrovnik in Croatia. This stunning historical city grew even more famous after being used as the set for King’s Landing in the HBO series Game of Thrones.

Last year, this walled city saw 6.5 million tourists – an incredible volume of people compared to its 40,000 residents. That’s 16,250 tourists for every 100 locals.

In second place is Reykjavik in Iceland

This arctic city had more tourists than Dubrovnik, with 7.4 million visitors to its 140,000 population, coming out at 5,286 tourists per every 100 locals.

The city is famous for its Blue Lagoon thermal baths and of course, the chance to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights lighting up the sky.

Coming in third is the floating city of Venice in Italy. Possibly one of the most famous cities in the world, Venice saw 10.6 million tourists in the last year.

Compared to its population of 250,000 that’s 4,240 international visitors per 100 residents. Tourists love this city for its incredible architecture and the chance to drift along its canal streets by gondola.

Geneva in Switzerland came in fourth in the list with 7.8 million tourists in 2025. The city has 200,000 locals, making 3,900 visitors per 100 residents.

Famed for its incredible views of the Alps, Geneva is a great place to base yourself while going out on day trips into the mountains and seeing the stunning villages dotted throughout them.

In fifth place was Porto in Portugal. The city saw seven million international tourists in 2025 against its population of 250,000.

With 2,800 tourists for every 100 residents, this is a very popular place to visit. The narrow streets are lined with gorgeous architecture and stunning Portuguese tiles that make for a beautiful photo opportunity.

With the river cutting through the city, you can explore both sides of the city in a day – just make sure you pack your walking shoes.
