An influential Iranian official has issued an update on the health conditions of the Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei. Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Iran, claimed on Sunday: « The Leader of the Revolution is in complete health and is fully managing the situation. »
Khamenei, son of the late Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei killed on the first day of Operation Epic Fury, has yet to make a public appearance since the beginning of the war. In his statement, shared by Iranian state news outlet ISNA on X, Araghchi didn’t immediately provide an evidence supporting the health condition of the country’s leader.
It comes as the US President Donald Trump questioned whether the new Supreme Leader of Iran, who hasn’t been seen since Operation Epic Fury began, is « even alive » in a new interview. During an interview with NBS news, Mr Trump said: « I don’t know if he’s even alive. So far, nobody’s been able to show him. »
US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth claimed on Friday that the son of Ali Khamenei is « wounded and likely disfigured ».
Addressing the ongoing developments in Iran, Araghchi also said that Tehran is prepared to form a committee with regional countries to investigate the recent attacks and clarify which targets were struck.
The senior official claimed that Iran’s military operations are aimed exclusively at US bases and American interests in the region, adding that, so far, no civilian or residential areas in neighboring countries have been targeted by Iran.
Drones and missiles suspected to have been launched from Iran have been battering the Middle East over the past fortnight.
In early March, Nakhchivan Airport in Azerbaijan was hit by a drone, with the government blaming Iran for the strike – although Tehran denied wrongdoing.
Commenting on the prospects for ending the conflict, he said: « The war can only end if there are guarantees that it will not be repeated, along with compensation. »
He said that no definitive plan has yet emerged to halt the conflict, but claimed Iran would be open to any regional initiative that, in its view, brings about a just resolution.
Addressing speculation about Khark Island, Iran’s main oil export hub in the Persian Gulf which was hit by US strikes on Friday night, Araghchi warned that any attempt to seize the island would be “an even greater mistake than attacking it.”
He also touched on the Strait of Hormuz, claiming the vital waterway remains open to all nations “except for American vessels and their allies.”
