The Met Office issued a new weather warning for rain and snow on Tuesday evening. The national weather forecaster issued a yellow alert set to be in place between 4am on Wednesday, February 18, and 8pm the same day.
The Met Office explained: « An area of rain, falling as snow over some high ground, will move slowly east across much of Northern Ireland during Wednesday, before tending to ease later in the day. This will be accompanied by strong southeasterly winds which may gust 45-55 mph in places, particularly during the morning. Rainfall totals of 10-15 mm fairly widely, with 20-30 mm in some southern and western areas. Whilst many places will see little if any lying snow, there is potential for several cm to accumulate on higher ground, chiefly above 250 metres, with the main focus being over the Sperrins during the morning. »
The National Weather Agency warned that outbreaks of rain, hill snow and strong winds may bring some disruption to travel during Wednesday.
It said: « Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer. Some interruption to power supplies and other services possible. Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible. »
At present, there are several warnings of snow for other parts of the UK for Wednesday. According to the forecaster, a period of snow could bring some disruption to parts of Wales and central England later Wednesday and overnight into Thursday.
