Met Office issues 18-hour amber weather warnings and ‘danger to life’ alert | Weather | News

The Met Office has issued a rare amber weather warning, spanning 18 hours, with a « danger to life » alert sent to residents in the impacted regions. The weather warnings are in place in Scotland from midnight on Thursday until 6pm for Central, Tayside & Fife (Angus, Perth and Kinross), and Grampian (Aberdeenshire).

The amber weather warning states: « Rain will be persistent and heavy during Thursday with widespread accumulations of 60-80 mm likely and as much as 100-120 mm over high ground. Event totals since Wednesday evening may exceed 150 mm in a few places. This is expected to lead to some surface water and river flooding across the area. This Amber warning indicates where there is a greater likelihood of medium-level impacts due mainly to river flooding, with the Yellow warning covering a wider area and longer time period. »

The Met Office has warned that homes and businesses are likely to be flooded, causing damage to some buildings, while fast-flowing or deep floodwater is likely to pose a « danger to life ».

There are likely to be delays and some cancellations to train and bus services, with spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. It is also likely that some communities will be cut off by flooded roads.

Brits in affected areas have been urged to prepare a flood kit that could help protect their homes or businesses from flooding-related loss or damage.

A flood kit should include insurance and any other important documents; a torch & spare batteries; a first-aid kit, prescription medicines, and supplies for looking after your family members or pets; and warm, waterproof clothes, blankets, food, and water.
