Mark Carney demands ‘respect’ from Donald Trump minutes after becoming Canada PM | World | News

Mark Carney issued a stern warning to the Trump administration as he celebrated becoming Canada’s next prime minister. Mr Carney secured a landslide victory in the Liberal Party leadership race and used his victory speech to criticise Donald Trump’s trade war and claims Canada should be the 51st US state.

He warned “America is not Canada” and hit out Mr Trump’s “unjustified tariffs”. Mr Carney said: « Donald Trump, as we know, has put unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell and how we make a living. He’s attacking Canadian families, workers and businesses and we cannot let him succeed and we won’t. »

He added: “We didn’t ask for this fight. But Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.

“The Americans, they should make no mistake, in trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.”

Mr Carney’s comments were seemingly a reference to Canada’s recent victory over the US in the 4 Nations Face-Off ice hockey tournament.

One match between the US and Canada saw three fights break out between the players in the first nine seconds.

Mr Carney, who was the first non-Briton to run the Bank of England since it was founded in 1694, said Canada will keep its initial retaliatory tariffs in place until “the Americans show us respect”.

The US President’s trade war and talk of making Canada the US’ 51st state have infuriated Canadians.

The American national anthem has been booed at NHL and NBA games, while some are cancelling trips to the US and even avoiding buying American goods.

Mr Carney: “The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country. Think about it. If they succeed they would destroy our way of life.

“In America health care is big business. In Canada it is a right.”

The US is a “melting pot. Canada is mosaic,” he said, adding: “America is not Canada. And Canada will never, ever be a part of America in any way, shape or form.

“These are dark days, dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust.

“We need to pull together in the tough days ahead.”

Mr Trump has postponed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico for a month.

Mr Carney succeeds Justin Trudeau and the surge in Canadian nationalism has bolstered the Liberal Party’s chances in a parliamentary election that’s expected within days or weeks.
