Peter Mandelson and Jeffrey Epstein exchanged celebratory messages when the disgraced financier served his sentence for child sex offences. The former cabinet minister described the paedophile financier being let out of prison as “Liberation day” and called him a « naughty boy ».
To which Mandelson asked: « How is freedom feeling? » Epstein responded: « She feels fresh, firm and creamy » Mandelson replied: « Naughty boy ».
These crude exchanges have sparked widespread disgust among political figures. SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn expressed his outrage on social media, writing: “Sick bastards.”
The revelations come as Lord Mandelson faces a criminal investigation and has resigned from the House of Lords, piling further pressure on the Labour grandee.
Mandelson has stepped down from the House of Lords as documents suggested Epstein made $75,000 (£55,000) in payments to Mandelson in three separate $25,000 transactions in 2003 and 2004.
In his letter to Labour’s general secretary on Sunday, Lord Mandelson said: « I have been further linked this weekend to the understandable furore surrounding Jeffrey Epstein and I feel regretful and sorry about this. »
Mandelson broke his silence earlier this week with an astonishing statement of praise for his former paedophile friend.
Speaking to The Times, Lord Mandelson described Epstein as « Outwardly, completely charming and engaging. He was very clever.”
He also praised the investor’s dinner parties, using the interview as an opportunity to name-drop major public figures he was set up to dine with thanks to Mr Epstein.
He said: « I sat next to someone in charge of brain research at Harvard. I was sitting opposite the founders of Google. At the other end of the table was Bill Gates.
« I think I also brushed past Noam Chomsky on a later date, but he wasn’t having much to do with me given that he was a Marxist philosopher and I was a Blairite.”
