Man Utd winger in talks for January transfer exit after summer move collapsed | Football | Sport

Manchester United‘s Sam Mather is poised for a January exit after a failed summer move to Turkish club Kayserispor. The 21-year-old is eager to leave United to jumpstart his professional career, with clubs in Turkey, Germany and Greece showing interest. Talks about the young player’s future have been ongoing, with United prepared to make allowances for Mather to depart as soon as possible following the collapse of his summer transfer.

The Manchester Evening News reported advanced talks with Kayserispor on Turkey’s deadline day in September. The Turkish club was keen to secure Mather on a permanent basis. An agreement was reached regarding the fee and buyback clause, and it’s believed personal terms were also verbally settled with the forward. A timeline was set by United for finalising the deal, requiring board approval, but the club ultimately decided there wasn’t sufficient time to complete the transfer.

Following the closure of the European transfer windows, Mather’s options became limited, leading to negotiations with UAE club Al Wahda FC in late September. United insisted on a buy-back clause in any deal to sell Mather, a standard practice for academy departures, but the UAE club did not concur.

Mather had to grapple with the frustration of missing out on a new beginning. He has persisted in training with the first team and has featured in four academy matches to maintain his momentum.

The winger netted twice against Norwich in his inaugural appearance of the season, but he has surpassed academy football and is eager to depart from his childhood club to advance his career.

Mather has mainly been deployed on the left wing during his tenure in the academy, but his favoured position is the No.10 role. His contract at Old Trafford is set to expire in the summer of 2027.
