A popular UK chain is set to open its first drive-through this May. Unlike some of its competitors, Pret A Manger had not previously had a drive-through – but this is set to change. Pret is a top choice of coffee shop for a huge amount of Brits. With its selection of hot drinks, pastries and sandwiches, Pret is a firm favourite for many.
The chain is a high-street staple for lunch, breakfast or a coffee break. Now, it will be available for drivers. While the location of its first drive-through is top secret, it will be tucked into a roadside forecourt. The site is launching in partnership with petrol station operator, Motor Fuel Group.
Customers may see around 400 travel-friendly locations pop up across the country, allowing Pret to compete with other big names such as Costa and Starbucks.
Pret has around 60 walk-in roadside locations, with another 30 set to open, including its new drive-through stores. Pret aims to grow from 500 shops to 1,500 across the UK.
As for its competitors, Starbucks and Costa, these have had drive through stores for much longer.
Starbucks opened its first drive-through in Cardiff in 2008, and Costa opened its first drive-through in Nottingham in 2011.
Clare Clough, Pret’s managing director for UK & Europe, said: “Throughout the past five years, we’ve made it a priority to bring Pret to more people, whether you’re a City worker commuting to the office, a parent juggling work and family life, or someone catching up with friends.
“Now, we’re taking that further, making Pret a destination for customers in a bit less of a rush who want a comfortable space to enjoy delicious food and spend time with family and friends.
“Our teams have been hard at work making sure everything from the shop design to the unique menu items have been carefully thought through and we can’t wait to see how our customers respond.”
On its website, Pret says: “Since opening our first shop in 1986, Pret’s mission has been simple.
“To serve freshly made food and good organic coffee, whilst also trying to do the right thing.
“That’s why our food is handmade in our shop kitchens throughout the day and anything we don’t sell, goes to charity.
“That’s also why our coffee is organic (and always will be) and our Coffee Fund is supporting the next generation of farmers. It’s (partly) what we think makes Pret special.”
