Liverpool will meet Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-finals following a commanding victory against Galatasaray on Wednesday night. The Reds entered the second leg at Anfield needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit. In that fixture, Mario Lemina proved decisive with his seventh-minute goal. Trailing but undeterred, Arne Slot’s team appeared before the Kop with determination, and it wasn’t long before Liverpool broke the deadlock.
Dominic Szoboszlai struck first, 25 minutes into proceedings via a cleverly executed corner, racing into the penalty area unchallenged as the delivery was fired in hard and low before directing it towards goal. Mohamed Salah then had a chance to double the evening’s score from the penalty spot when Szoboszlai was fouled in the box by Ismail Jakobs.
Nevertheless, the Egyptian couldn’t beat Ugurcan Cakir from 12 yards, sending the ball down the centre with the Turkish goalkeeper thwarting Salah with his feet. In the second half, Hugo Ekitike extended Liverpool’s advantage for the evening 51 minutes in.
Salah made amends for his previous mistake by finding the French striker at the far post, leaving the 23-year-old with minimal effort as he converted past Cakir from close range. The floodgates truly burst open shortly afterwards, with Ryan Gravenberch finding the net just two minutes later, hammering home a rebounded attempt from Salah inside the box.
Wilfried Singo experienced a nightmare shortly after the third goal, inadvertently directing Jeremie Frimpong’s cross into his own net. However, Galatasaray supporters around the globe breathed a sigh of relief when Frimpong was ruled offside during the build-up, leaving the scoreline at 3-0 for the evening and 3-1 on aggregate.
Nonetheless, it didn’t take long for Liverpool to produce a superb fourth goal, with Salah cutting in on his preferred left foot, executing a clever one-two with Florian Wirtz and curling the ball into the corner at the 62-minute mark.
Whilst Liverpool haven’t quite sealed the deal yet, it appears they are on course to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals with a resounding win over Galatasaray – the match seemingly beyond the reach of Okan Buruk’s team.
As things stand, Liverpool will take on Paris Saint-Germain away from home first in the final eight, before a return leg at Anfield.
They would then face either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the semi-final, with the winner of the opposite side of the draw, which features Arsenal and Barcelona, potentially coming in the final.
