Danny Murphy reckons Liverpool supporters would understand Jurgen Klopp taking the next Real Madrid manager’s position. Klopp returned to the UK yesterday as he prepares to occupy the home dugout at Anfield for the Liverpool legends versus Borussia Dortmund legends match on Saturday afternoon.
The charity fixture kicks off at 3pm, with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Thiago Alcantara, Pepe Reina, Peter Crouch and many others participating. The Reds will be led by Sir Kenny Dalglish, with Klopp, Ian Rush and John Aldridge supporting the Kop legend. Klopp departed as Liverpool manager in the summer of 2024 after nearly nine years at the helm, to have a sabbatical from management.
Throughout his tenure in charge of the Reds, Klopp secured the Champions League and Premier League, and his strong connection with the club led him to declare he would never manage another English side.
And despite the fact Klopp has been Red Bull‘s global head of soccer since last year, it hasn’t stopped him being regularly linked with a comeback to coaching.
Real Madrid have been referenced as a potential destination in recent weeks following Xabi Alonso’s exit in January.
And Murphy, speaking via CasinoHawks as reported by the Liverpool Echo, said: « I think Liverpool fans would understand if Jurgen Klopp took the Real Madrid job.
« They adore him and love him so much. They probably think Real Madrid and Barcelona are the two clubs he might manage, other than managing Liverpool again one day.
« He said he’d never manage another club in England, and I believe in the relationship he has with the city and the supporters, I don’t think he’d ever go back on that.
« I think they’d wish him well until the day they played each other. I really do. I think they think that highly of him. »
Nevertheless, Murphy’s assertions come after Klopp earlier this week conceded he might return to coaching, but dismissed speculation linking him with a return to management at Real this summer as ‘nonsense’.
He said: « If Real Madrid had phoned, we would have heard about it by now. But that’s all nonsense. They haven’t called even once, not once. My agent is there, you can ask him.
« They haven’t called him either. Right now I’m not thinking about that, luckily there’s no reason to.
« For my age I’m quite advanced in life, but as a coach I’m not completely finished. I haven’t reached retirement age. Who knows what will happen in the coming years? But there’s nothing planned. »
