Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly refused to do one major thing amid their plans to step down as senior working royals. The couple, who now live in Montecito, announced their decision to step down from royal duties in January 2020, with their final engagement taking place just weeks later.
The couple then spent time in Canada before moving to California with their son. After revealing their plans on their then-joint Instagram account, Meghan travelled to Canada to reunite with Prince Archie, who was less than a year old.
The Daily Mirror’s royal editor, Russell Myers, wrote at the time that Meghan left Harry « to face the music alone » as Harry attended a Megxit summit to discuss the couple’s future.
A senior palace source has explained that as the couple pitched a half-in, half-out arrangement, they refused to give any more options as to what they wanted to do and that they got « nothing in return ».
The source said: « We already knew they were intent on signing commercial deals and that just wasn’t going to work within the model.
« So we kept saying to them, ‘How do you want this to work? Do you actually have a tangible plan that could help us?’, but we got nothing in return. »
As per Russell Myers’ new book, titled William & Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, courtiers insist that palace staff had « bent over backwards » to accommodate the couple, but to no avail.
A former courtier described the Sussexes as a pair of « loose cannons” « who were not trusted within the wider household. »
Harry previously spoke about the term, ‘Megxit’, referring to it as a misogynistic term.
He previously said: « Maybe people know this, and maybe they don’t, but the term Megxit was or is a misogynistic term, and it was created by a troll, amplified by royal correspondents, and it grew and grew and grew into mainstream media. But it began with a troll. »
