Keir Starmer has been forced to confess a major snubbing by Donald Trump, in the latest deterioration of Britain’s presence on the world stage. Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions this lunchtime, Sir Keir said he had only managed to get in touch with White House “aides” following yesterday’s crunch Paris summit on the future security of Ukraine.
However at a press briefing for journalists on Monday, the PM’s spokesman said Sir Keir was aiming to speak with President Trump personally after the summit. The confession will spark further concerns that Sir Keir and Britain has been sidelined by the United States at a crunch moment in global security. The confession by Sir Keir came amid questions from Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, who said the Prime Minister “should have spoken to President Trump by now”
Speaking in the Commons Sir Keir admitted: “Of course I will speak to President Trump.”
“I spoke to his senior advisors yesterday. We were with them all day.”
Ms Badenoch hit back: “This is important! He should be calling an urgent meeting with NATO leaders, he should have spoken to President Trump by now.
“This is important, because if any such peace deal is breached we would be in direct conflict with Russia.
“If the PM is committing troops he must give more detail on how he intends to ensure our armed forces are fully resourced.”
Sir Keir later insisted: “I can assure the house I spoke to President Trump over the Christmas period in relation to this specific issue.
“Along with members of the E3 [Germany and France], along with European allies, that has been a constant course of our discussions.
“There’s no question of acting on this without full discussion with the Americans and their senior negotiators were there at President Trump’s request yesterday.”
Tory shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel said: « Keir Starmer is trying to pose as an influential player on the international stage. But it looks like he has been embarrassed – and not for the first time.
“It’s little wonder our greatest ally takes this view when Starmer is kowtowing to China at every opportunity and siding with the people who wish harm to our country.
“Starmer is too weak to stand up for Britain on the international stage and to protect NATO. Only the Conservatives will put our national interest first. »
