James Foley, a journalist abducted and savagely murdered by the notorious ISIS executioner dubbed « Jihadi John », is reported to have spoken six haunting final words before his death.
Foley disappeared on 22 November 2012 in north-western Syria close to the Turkish border following his capture by ISIS fighters. He had been reporting for the American digital news platform GlobalPost at the time.
Two years on, ISIS distributed a horrifying video depicting James on his knees beside a figure dressed entirely in black.
He was forced to deliver a message penned by the terrorists, declaring that the « real killer » is the US, prior to his savage killing.
Mere moments before being taken to his death, Foley had been speaking with British photojournalist John Cantlie.
His purported final words were: « Great, captured on Thanksgiving Day, killed on my mum’s birthday. »
These words appeared in ISIS’ warped propaganda publication Dabiq, presumably composed under severe duress. Reports emerged in 2017 suggesting that Cantlie had perished in an airstrike in Mosul.
After James’ killing, then-US President Barack Obama voiced his revulsion, stating: « The entire world is appalled. No just God would stand for what they did yesterday or every single day.
« People like this ultimately fail. They fail because the future’s won by those who build and not destroy. The world is shaped by people like Jim Foley. »
Following the release of the footage, US forces executed 14 air strikes aimed at ISIS terrorists near the Mosul dam in northern Iraq.
The man who murdered James, known as Jihadi John and born Mohammed Emwazi in London, was a member of the terrorist group alongside three other Britons, infamously dubbed the ISIS Beatles.
Emwazi met his end in a drone strike in Raqqa in 2015, reportedly traced to a kebab takeaway shop.
A defence source revealed to The Sun: « We’d been monitoring Emwazi six weeks and identified a pattern in which he’d visit a building near his mosque. « The team asked MI6 about the building and it came back that it was a kebab shop.
One day he walked out of the kebab shop there and the boy ran off to play football. It was our chance.
« In 2022, Diane Foley, James’ mother, found herself face-to-face with one of the men complicit in her son’s murder. Alexanda Kotey, also known as Jihadi George, is currently serving a life sentence at the ADX Florence supermax prison in Colorado.
Their meeting took place in a Virginia courthouse where Kotey was being held.Since the tragic loss of her son, Diane has devoted her life to securing the release of hostages and spent four hours with Kotey, as reported by the BBC.
She said: « I wanted Kotey to be confronted with the horror of what he did. For him to understand the goodness he destroyed and why people like James were in Syria.
« It’s because they cared and wanted to report the truth to the world. » Diane went on to say: « He said had been praying to his God for forgiveness. He shared a picture of his family, he has some young children whom he will probably never see again. It made me realise how much he’s lost by following hatred and propaganda. It made me pity him. »
