Jordan Spieth makes Masters apology after unfortunate fan incident | Golf | Sport

Jordan Spieth apologised to a Masters patron after a loose drive struck the spectator in the head. Spieth has been playing well in Augusta and looks set to make the cut going into the final two rounds.

If Spieth can be described as anything, it’s unpredictable. Legend says when he drives a ball, the golf gods flip a coin and it will either land in the fairway, or the patrons’ area. During the second round, the ball not only found itself in the latter, it struck the head of one spectator. When he made his way down the fairway, Spieth went out of his way to find the patron he hit and give him the perfect souvenir from the iconic tournament.

When the patron was pointed out, Spieth turned to his caddy and asked him to take a golf glove and a sharpie pen out of his bag. He then signed it and gave it to the patron while sharing a laugh with the two friends.

One of them could be heard saying « but I was protecting him » as Spieth offered the glove. Perhaps most importantly, neither of the patrons appeared to spill any of their beer, despite a rock solid golf ball flying towards their heads at terrifying speed.

In regards to golf balls flying into patrons, Spieth’s effort was not the most spectacular mishit of the day. The most impressive, and of course unintentional, patron strike came from Xander Schauffele.

The two-time major winner somehow struck a tee-shot into the shopping bag of a patron on the eighth hole. It was the kind of effort he would not have been able to pull off had a million dollars been on the line.

It proved to be a huge stroke of luck as it likely would have zipped off the surface and bounced into even thicker rough. Once the location of the ball was ascertained, a golf tee was placed under the bag to mark its location before the ball was taken out and placed in the vicinity.

He then picked up the bag and handed it to the stunned woman, who may have secretly been hoping they’d never found the ball. After he hit two under par in the first round, Schauffele said: “It just flew straight into the bag. It was a great break.

« That bounce would’ve put me in the pine straw, and who knows if I would’ve had a shot to hit up the hill. So thanks to the lady on 8.”
