‘I’ve worked on a cruise ship for 10 years – ask this question for a really special reply’ | Cruise | Travel

With over a decade of experience working on and with cruise ships, an expert has shared her top tip on how to find the best deal at sea, which could transform your trip into a luxury one.

Daniella, who has been a cruise director for six years and even lived on ship for nearly a year, most definitely knows a thing or two about cruises.

The cruise expert shared that one common mistake holidaymakers make is failing to muster up enough courage to ask for an upgrade.

Since covid, many ships are currently carrying fewer passengers than they normally would, meaning that plenty of rooms are often up for grabs and will be left empty unless customers ask for an upgrade.

Daniella said, as reported by Reader’s Digest: « People are often nervous to ask for an upgrade, but those rooms will just be left empty if they’re not filled by departure time.

“We love making guests happy, and as long as you’re polite and phrase it as a question, not a demand, we’ll do our best!”

Daniella advised holidaymakers should, after boarding, find an employee who is greeting guests and ask them about rooms available for upgrades.

These employees will be aware of the different policies and will know how best to assist you.

“And in case you were wondering, you can ask for an upgrade regardless of how you purchased your tickets”, said Daniella.

Several cruise lines now offer the opportunity to bid for an upgrade after you have booked your initial cabin. This means tourists can offer an extra amount of money for that nicer cabin that has caught your eye.

If the bid is accepted, they will get the upgrade at the bid price – but there is no guarantee the bid will be accepted.

Daniella also advised letting staff know if the holiday is marking a special event, like a milestone anniversary or a honeymoon, as it may help to bag an upgrade. Even if people can’t get an upgrade, the cruise expert assures that employees will find other ways to make the trip unforgettable.
